We were thrilled with the original 12 LOTRED decks, but we wanted more! There’s only so much you can do with 12 decks and besides, there were many significant characters that had been left out. Faramir and Sharku, for example, were going to be part of the original set but with the project taking a long time, they were trimmed off to get to completion.
“Armies” is 6 decks in all, and all have at least 3 characters as part of the set. As with the original 12 decks, I suggest just going out and printing them all.
Why is it called “Armies?” There were many, many characters discussed for expansion and not all are included here. A “Legends” expansion could include characters like Elrond and Isildur, a “Giants” expansion could include the Balrog and the Ents. JRR Tolkein created a rich world, Peter Jackson brought a lot of it to life, and this expansion is just a tiny selection of the characters out there.
For those who know me, I can be a stickler about following the “rules” of Epic Duels design, but this set represents some heavy breaking of rules, and to what I think are great results. The Uruk-Hai army, mostly developed by Robert Moore, has dual majors along with 2 minors, but it works. So does the Nazgul deck, featuring 3 indistinguishable major/minors. The other decks are more traditional, but Eomer is one of my personal favorites.
Enjoy!
